So you have lags? (Server location pool)
Hello guys,
i keep seeing lots of comments from you about server lags etc (by you i mean mostly Suzy ). Honestly it's not lagging for me at all and in my opinion the issue with your lags is somewhere on route to the server (your ISP).
Anyways the server renewal is coming soon (thanks again to Kaska and Xtos for the latest one and all the previous ones) and we have the opportunity to switch it for a cheaper one but more important for a different located one.
I have an account in digitalocean where is the 1.32 server running already and they offer few locations for your server in their datacenters where you can place your server and also move it between them without reinstall. I am not sure where exactly is our current server placed (office, house, basement?) but these are big datacenters with lots of direct traffic and placed directly in the network "nodes" (basically they are the nodes themself so there is 99% chance that your ISP is directly connected to them and they are directly connected between each other) like Frankfurt for an example so there is just no better place for a server to be.
I have prepared a pool for you so i would like to know your opinion because its also your future
You may choose 3 options and we could probably pick the one with most votes?
Anyways go ahead and place your vote.
Some summary
Current V1
Pros: hmm
Cons: you know them better than i do.
Digital ocean:
5 dollars per month
3 different location
placed directly in big datacenters (network nodes)
full control of Operating system (root)
unlimited slots
Unlimited servers (maybe not unlimited but we could definitely run atleast 5 instances of q3 in the same time )
Looking forward for your votes.
Cheers

Re: So you have lags? (Server location pool)
I am also thinking about to start 1.16 on my Frankfurt server for you to test the ping etc.
Or you can fire up your 1.32 instance and connect to RA server to test the ping.

Frankfurt is the best choise imo, the only shitty thing is the ip would change im not sure how many people follow the forum, so maybe we could add an info display in the console..

Re: So you have lags? (Server location pool)
I don't think IP will be the issue here.
As soon as they won't be able to connect, they will check the site and find new IP.
OFC there will be a big banner or something about the IP change. They don't need to visit forum to get it.

I think the Netherlands is the best central placed option , as europe's most internet traffic is mostly routed over the Amsterdam Internet Exchange.
Placing a gameserver there would be a great benefit. Also i think is more central for the players i see playing on the V server , from UK to Denmark to Poland to Spain and everything surrounding it and in between.
What is the reason you pick DE as best pick for everybody?
(not that DE is bad , would be my second pick) , just curious.
Also a BIG banner is good on the current V server , the moment we picked new IP , in order to promote it while the new IP is already up. Maby even make it impossible to join the game , just so that people READ the info that we have a new IP and that the old one is going down soon.

Re: So you have lags? (Server location pool)
is that gonna effect our pings? i always get diff pings in diff servers...
hi baby
Re: So you have lags? (Server location pool)
Frankfurt 1.16 or maybe try freeze on 1.32 with OSP mod?
Re: So you have lags? (Server location pool)
I just see De as the more central option, we have also players from turkey, slovakia, serbia, italy....But also with netherlands i would be happy if people would vote for it...What is the reason you pick DE as best pick for everybody?

Re: So you have lags? (Server location pool)
yes because diff servers have diff locations. that's why you are getting different ping.clemence wrote:is that gonna effect our pings? i always get diff pings in diff servers...
Depends on what is the distance between you and the server.
Amsterdam is better choice when we compare it with UK. But if you check the map and realize that we have players from spain, poland, italy croatia the Amsterdam is not such big improvement for them. I would say Frankfurt is more centralized. What is the reason you pick DE as best pick for everybody?

I would say Frankfurt is more central as i stated above. And yes most internet traffic goes through Amsterdam but only because it is the main connection to UK island.I think the Netherlands is the best central placed option , as europe's most internet traffic is mostly routed over the Amsterdam Internet Exchange.

Re: So you have lags? (Server location pool)
Ok i see ur logic, but its not helping if people are routed trough Amsterdam to end up in Frankfurt..YeLLoW wrote: I would say Frankfurt is more central as i stated above. And yes most internet traffic goes through Amsterdam but only because it is the main connection to UK island.
If the routing is NOT over Amsterdam then ofc Frankfurt is the best option!
The only way to visually find out, is if people do a tracert to see if they got routed over Amsterdam or not...
ill start with mine, hope the rest will also post a trace to the current Frankfurt server IP:

Re: So you have lags? (Server location pool)
its always the shortest possible way from your country's main node (for you its Amsterdam) to the main node of neighbor country etc. Which is for you Frankfurt. As you can see from you to your ISP its 6ms, from there to Amsterdam main node is 1-2 ms (7-8ms between you and Amsterdam) and then from Amsterdam to Frankfurt its 8ms (16ms between you and Frank.) Your last 5 hopes are within datacenter so you can ignore them.stupidcat wrote:but its not helping if people are routed trough Amsterdam to end up in Frankfurt..
Ppl from Poland could go directly Warszawa > Frankfurt or maybe Warszawa > Berlin > Frankfurt. But who knows. Sometimes there is no direct connection. As for me i am from Bratislava but we are connected to Frankfurt directly. As you can see i am not going through czech republics node.
Networking is complicated

would be intressting to see the trace route of suzy and people from uk, for me i can say i would be happy, just 14 ms and 8 hops
Re: So you have lags? (Server location pool)
So, well, yeah, Frankfurt must be the right choice, not only for the server offering options as the main advantage of beeing "more central" for most of the players current playing. But, most of the players dont play as often and long as some of us play, who sometimes spend hours connected to the server. For those and i mean Savage, Inferno (Cris) and Star and Me,Myself&Mal and some few others who live a bit far from Frankfurt location, will for sure notice some increase of effort in general gameplay mode. nah okay 10 votes total , i dont think many more will vote or post traces , so i guess it will be Frankfurt.
I suppose the current V2 server(ip) will stay up then?
U might wanna start putting that banner up on the (old) server then , and perhaps like mentioned before: blocking people to be able to enter the match/red/blue team so they will be forced to read the banner and connect to the new IP

Re: So you have lags? (Server location pool)
@Mal i don't think a bit increased ping will make any difference when the delag is on. The more important thing as ping/numbers is the overall feel from the server. Smoothness etc. Your ping is compensated anyways.
@Cat i am pretty happy even with current server I have never issues with lags nor ping. So basically i would not do this for myself
Firstly i would like to know the opinions. The feel is most important here. But i will post the banner so ppl go and try it. I was pretty happy to see you guys there tonight and getting feedback.
Later we can also try moving the server to Amsterdam and try it from there. I am open to all options

Re: So you have lags? (Server location pool)
timeout doesnt mean error. Its just that gateway is not pingable (blocked by firewall)
Thats why i said tracert will tell me shit. It just pings 1x all gateways in the route.
It does not show me if you are loosing packets or any usefull stuff.
Use fraps or your cell phone to record real gameplay issues. That would be most helpful. Maybe with an timestamp where did you experience the lag.
